About Kingwood Big Band
Organized in the fall of 2004, the Kingwood Big Band, under the direction of Alfredo Vélez, is a collection of adult musicians sponsored by Lonestar College-Kingwood in Kingwood, Texas. Band members include LSC-K students, engineers, medical professionals, music educators and businessmen drawn together by a mutual love of classic and contemporary big band jazz.
Kingwood Big Band repertoire now includes music made famous by such jazz luminaries as Duke Ellington, Harry James, Stan Kenton, Tommy Dorsey and other contemporary jazz composers.
In 2007, the Big Band made their European debut, traveling to Italy (Rome and Assisi) and Switzerland, where they participated in the International Jazz Festival in Montreux. While in Rome, the band performed at the Mississippi Jazz Club, becoming part of the club's 75-year-old history along with many of the jazz greats, including Bennie Golson, Ella Fitzgerald, and Miles Davis.
